Ceramic Veneers

3D Rendering of teeth with a ceramic veneerJust like anything used on a daily basis, your teeth and gums undoubtedly become subject to wear and tear. Your teeth may lose their brightness and are unable to be whitened, or a tooth may have become chipped or misshapen over time. Or maybe your teeth have shifted, leaving a small gap between. Veneers are a solution used by our dentists at Singing River Dentistry to treat the many types of damage your teeth have endured.

What is a veneer?

A veneer is a cosmetic improvement to your teeth using a thin shell-like covering that is placed over the front part of your tooth. It can be made out of either porcelain or composite resin. These thin shells are made to look like natural teeth both in size and color. They are used to fix the areas of your teeth such as stained teeth that can’t be whitened, chipped or misshapen teeth, and can fix uneven spaces or gaps between your teeth.

Porcelain or Ceramic Veneers

One type of veneer is made from porcelain. These are built from a custom mold taken by our dentist after a small portion of tooth enamel is removed to make room for the veneer. Once the veneer is made, our dentists place the veneers on the teeth and bond them to the tooth to remain in place. Since the molding was created unique to your teeth, no other shaping will be necessary. Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, have a natural appearance, and are a strong and durable solution. Porcelain veneers often require more than one office visit.

Composite Resin Veneers

The other type of veneer is made out of composite resin. This type is done in often one visit to the dentist, unlike porcelain veneers which sometimes need a few days to be made. After the tooth is prepared and a small amount of tooth enamel is taken off, our dentist bonds the composite resin veneer, and then sculpts it. A special light is used to harden the composite and finish the bonding process. Our dentists then smooth and polish the composite resin to make it a perfect and natural fit. The composite resin veneers may require less enamel to be removed than porcelain veneers and, in many cases, can be done with just one office visit.

Prior to Getting Veneers

Before our dentists begin the process of fitting either the porcelain or composite resin veneers, your teeth and gums must both be cleaned and examined for any tooth and gum disease or any other complications. It is important to note, placing veneers is not a reversible process since it requires some tooth enamel to be removed. Additionally, they may need to be adjusted or replaced over time. However, veneers can drastically improve the look and feel of your smile.
